(2) Studies have shown that carriers of one of the well-known ADD risk genes have significantly lower dopamine-mediated cortisol (stress hormone) responses than normal controls to stress,[581] meaning they can tolerate much larger increases in dopamine before stress-regulation mechanisms create higher levels of brain-calming cortisol; [582] [583] [584]

(3) When you start with lower than optimal dopamine and norepinephrine (the ADD brain),[585] [586] and you are presented with a "threat" or a situation that activates your EB, your dopamine and norepinephrine levels will move up towards optimal which produces the same positive effects that traditional ADD medications produce for the ADD EB. In other words, your ADD brain is being "medicated" by the increased EB output of dopamine and norepinephrine and you feel calmer, more focused, faster, and better. Such a positive "threat" response is often responsible for the last minute focus, concentration, and completion of assignments by the ADDer as the fear factor goes up as a deadline approaches (indecisive until the fear of a quickly approaching deadline kicks neuro-transmitters up high enough to produce focus, organization, direction, and follow-through — a process often incorrectly called "procrastination");
